Community Description
Our uniquely small kindergarten is nestled in the welcoming and friendly community of Portobello with stunning harbour views. Portobello is a diverse and supportive community. It is the only early childhood service beyond Macandrew Bay. At Portobello children experience a wide range of local curriculum inclusive of regular excursions to our surrounds and beyond. We embrace cultural diversity, sustainability, creativity through art, music and literacy. Curiosity is nurtured and children get dirty while having a LOT of fun.
Portobello runs a ‘kindergarten day’ programme: Monday to Friday 8.30am – 2.30pm
Our Code, Our Standards
The Code sets out the high standards for ethical behaviour that are expected of every teacher; the Standards describe the expectations of effective teaching practice. On appointment as a kaiako within Dunedin Kindergartens there is an expectation that you will always adhere to the values within the code and meet the Standards for the Teaching Profession.
Specific Requirements:
Of particular importance to this community is a head teacher who:
• Is a leader with an ability to relate to the diversity of families the kindergarten serves
• Models and expects professional accountability and collective responsibility for the wellbeing and learning of all children in the kindergarten; ensuring that joy and learning go hand in hand
• As a leader fosters a cooperative environment, encouraging staff input, celebrates others strengths and values working as part of a small team
• Maintains an optimistic outlook, inspiring others to embrace change and challenges with enthusiasm
• Demonstrates and leads with a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi
• Is an effective pedagogical leader for teaching and learning and internal evaluation
• Implements and evaluates systems, processes and practices that promote ongoing improvement.
• A willingness to work positively and sensitively in professional partnership with the committee/ wider Dunedin Kindergartens community.
• Proactively promotes a positive kindergarten profile within the community.
